Saltby Continues its Jubilee Traditions with the Lighting of a Beacon

Posted on May 23, 2022

The Saltby Estate in Leicestershire is continuing its tradition of marking Her Majesty The Queen’s Jubilee celebrations with the lighting of a bonfire beacon on 2 June 2022.   More than 2,800 Platinum Jubilee beacons will be lit across the globe in honour of Her Majesty’s 70 year reign and The Saltby Estate is delighted to be a part of those celebrations.

Ten years ago, The Saltby Estate formed part of the official Royal Record by planting one of the 60 Diamond Jubilee woods across the UK, each spanning 60 acres to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.  Estate owners, the de Capell Brooke Family, oversaw the planting of more than 30,000 trees, including 5,000 oak trees, to form The Bescaby Oaks Diamond Wood.

Alexander de Capell Brooke said:

“Sustainable woodland management is truly a passion of ours and a decade on from planting over 30,000 trees to create The Bescaby Oaks Diamond Wood, the trees are flourishing and we are on track to achieve our goal to increase biodiversity and create new points of interest across the Estate.”

The lighting of beacons is a long and unbroken tradition in the UK gathering communities together to celebrate Royal Jubilees, Weddings and Coronations.   In 1897, beacons were lit to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee; in 1977, 2002 and 2012, beacons commemorated the Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees of Her Majesty The Queen, and in 2016 Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.

The lighting of the Saltby beacon has been championed by Wendy de Capell Brooke as part of The Saltby Estate’s wider Jubilee celebrations.

Alexander de Capell Brooke said:

“The Queen reaching her Platinum Jubilee is an unprecedented Royal event for Great Britain and we are delighted to be part of the official celebrations.  The Queen has lit up our lives for 70 years through her dedicated service and commitment and we are proud that we are able to light our beacon at Saltby in her honour and to celebrate in this way.”

The Platinum Jubilee beacon at Saltby will be lit by Alexander de Capell Brooke at 9.45 pm on Thursday, 2 June 2022 and will form part of the collaborative celebrations organised by The Saltby Estate and the residents of Saltby village.
